Kansas 17, BYU 13
0:46 — The undefeated magic has officially run out.
On fourth and 11 with the game on the line, Jake Retzlaff fired to Chase Roberts for eight yards, being stopped just short of the first down and turning the ball back over to Kansas. Kansas 17, BYU 13.
8:27 — After nearly three and a half quarters, BYU’s defense finally makes a potentially game-changing play.
With Kansas marching down the field and on a critical third and 12, Marque Collins picked off an errant Jalon Daniels throw in bounds on the sideline to give the Cougars new life. Kansas 17, BYU 13.
13:19 — Kansas is back on top.
Devin Neal found the end zone on a 3-yard run to put the Jayhawks ahead by four points. Kansas 17, BYU 13.
BYU’s defense was incredibly close to getting off the field, only for Kansas QB Jalon Daniels to pull off a surprise pooch punt on fourth and 14 which hit off of a Cougar defender and was recovered for a Jayhawks first down.
BYU 13, Kansas 10
4:30 — After burning more than 10 minutes of clock, BYU takes the lead on its first drive of the half.
Will Ferrin gave the Cougars a three point advantage on a 35-yard field goal to complete a 17-play, 66-yard drive. BYU 13, Kansas 10.
BYU 10, Kansas 10
It was a tough ending to a somewhat awkward half.
Despite BYU averaging more than six yards per carry, the Cougars chose to throw an end zone fade on the Kansas 9-yard line, only for Jake Retzlaff to be intercepted and miss out on the chance to take the lead.
BYU has now been inside the Jayhawks’ 10-yard line twice, yet only has three points to show for it.
The Cougars didn’t look anything close to terrible in the game’s first 30 minutes, but they were far from the caliber that’s put them at No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Jake Retzlaff is currently 11 for 16 in passing for 115 yards, a touchdown and an interception. BYU has ran the ball 14 times for 85 yards, with LJ Martin leading the way with 7.2 yards per carry.
The Cougars will receive the second half kickoff in hopes of erasing Retzlaff’s red zone mistake by quickly pulling ahead.
BYU 10, Kansas 10
0:39 — Jake Retzlaff makes his first mistake of the night.
Driving into the red zone with under a minute left to play in the half, Retzlaff under-threw a fade and was picked off by Mello Dotson. BYU 10, Kansas 10.
The interception effectively ended the first half, with BYU set to receive the kickoff after halftime.
1:46 — Kansas ties the game with a 25-yard field goal. BYU 10, Kansas 10.
The crowd noise at LaVell Edwards Stadium led to a pair of Jayhawk penalties — including one at BYU’s 2-yard line — to assist in derailing the drive.
8:48 — BYU’s offense is finally awake.
Jake Retzlaff found Hinckley Ropati for a 30-yard touchdown connection to give the Cougars their first lead of the night. BYU 10, Kansas 7.
Ropati’s score — which makes him the 11th different player on the team to catch a TD this season — capped off an eight play, 69-yard drive, as BYU has now accumulated 130 yards of offense.
14:14 — Will Ferrin puts BYU on the board with a 33-yard field goal.
The Cougars picked up 42 yards on the drive in 11 plays, with LJ Martin, Hinckley Ropati and Sione Moa each toting the rock for key gains.
Kansas 7, BYU 0
9:07 — Kansas strikes first.
The Jayhawks traveled 84 yards on 10 plays to open the night, culminating in a 8-yard rushing touchdown from Devin Neal. Kansas 7, BYU 0.
A communication breakdown led to BYU only having 10 players on the field for Neal’s touchdown, giving the decorated senior a clear path to the end zone.
BYU’s home showdown with Kansas will be televised on ESPN and can also be streamed on the ESPN app.
